HBM4EU

HBM4EU is a pioneering project aimed at enhancing the understanding of human exposure to hazardous chemicals and promoting human biomonitoring (HBM) as a vital assessment method. Launched in 2016 and concluding in June 2022, this initiative united experts from 120 partners across 28 participating countries, including 24 EU member states as well as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Israel, with a total funding of €74 million.

The project functions through a structured governance framework involving a Governing Board, National Hubs, and various advisory bodies, ensuring effective coordination and stakeholder engagement. HBM4EU undertook extensive research organized into 16 work packages, focusing on crucial areas such as exposure assessment, the European HBM platform, and transitioning scientific findings into policy. Moreover, the initiative aimed to establish sustainable practices for HBM in Europe beyond 2021 by fostering ongoing dialogues with policymakers at both national and EU levels.

With its wealth of resources, including publications and insights, HBM4EU has significantly contributed to public health and environmental policies across Europe.
