Human Capacity Systems Theory (HCST) is an independent conceptual framework created and developed by Jenni C. Miller. It examines how finite human capacity interacts with cumulative demands, recovery, and environmental conditions to shape functioning over time. Rather than treating distress as a personal failing, HCST asks what conditions a person’s system is operating under and how sustained overload can affect capable, motivated people.
The framework explores topics including load across biological, cognitive, emotional, relational, financial, and environmental domains; capacity allocation; chronic overload; protective adaptation; recovery debt; and the effects of sustained strain on hope and emotional range. Its foundational principles include that capacity is finite, load accumulates, regulation precedes performance, and recovery is biologically necessary.
HCST is presented through a public-facing website featuring foundational essays, a journal, a glossary, pathways, and introductory material. Miller is also developing the book Survival Mode Is a Math Problem, described as an introduction to the theory, and forthcoming instruments.
