Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater Inc is a community conservation organisation formed in 1989, when the population of Victoria’s Helmeted Honeyeater had fallen to just 50 birds. The group works to support the survival of this critically endangered bird, Victoria’s avian faunal emblem, and to contribute to the conservation of Australia’s distinctive flora and fauna. Its activities focus on protecting existing habitat and planting future habitat, while raising awareness and building community support for the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery project.
Based in and around the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area, about 50 kilometres east of Melbourne, the organisation offers several ways for people to take part. Its Indigenous Plant Nursery sells affordable local indigenous plants, and its education program engages schools, community groups, corporate volunteers and individuals in conservation. Supporters can volunteer, become members, donate, purchase merchandise, attend events or organise group planting days.
The organisation also shares news, species fact files, galleries and educational resources about Helmeted Honeyeaters, Leadbeater’s Possum, local wildlife, plants and the Yellingbo landscape
