HEMAYAT is a Vienna-based care center specializing in support for survivors of torture and war. Founded in 1995, its name means “care” and “protection” in Persian and Arabic. The organization helps people cope with the lasting effects of trauma, accompany grief, and work toward a future that supports participation and integration in Austria.
Its multidisciplinary services include psychotherapy, clinical psychology, medical care, body-oriented treatment methods, and treatment supported by interpreters. HEMAYAT serves adults, women, children, and young people, and also provides trauma-related information and guidance for relatives. Its WERKRAUM machmawas initiative is part of the center’s wider offering, alongside practical resources on trauma and self-help.
HEMAYAT relies on public funding and donations to sustain care. In 2025, it supported 2,006 people from 60 countries, including 300 minors, and delivered 26,787 hours of care. The organization also raises funds through benefit events and welcomes community support, helping make specialized treatment accessible to people who have experienced severe violence and displacement.
