About Herb Block Foundation
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, sponsored by The Herb Block Foundation, celebrates the creative talents of students in grades 7-12. Established in 2015, the editorial cartoon category is a testament to the Foundation's commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists and free expression. This category allows students to submit single-panel drawings, sequential comic art, and animated films with a political theme or message.
Winners of the Herblock Award for Editorial Cartooning receive a $2,000 scholarship, and their educators are recognized with a $500 prize. The program prides itself on supporting creative teens and provides access to exhibition and publication opportunities. Notable former participants include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, and Stephen King.
