About Hermanus Whale Festival
The Hermanus Whale Festival, celebrated annually in the picturesque coastal town of Hermanus, South Africa, is the oldest and largest event of its kind on the Cape Whale Coast. Now in its 32nd year, this iconic ECO-MARINE FESTIVAL honors the majestic Southern Right Whales and aims to raise environmental awareness and promote marine conservation. Attracting between 75,000 and 130,000 visitors over three days, the festival features an array of activities including family-friendly treasure hunts, a 10km fun run, and vibrant food stalls.
Set against the backdrop of Walker Bay, recognized for its rich marine biodiversity, the festival incorporates local and international conservation organizations, fostering a community of eco-consciousness. Visitors can enjoy a range of attractions, from engaging educational exhibits to lively performances. In 2022, the festival significantly boosted the local economy, contributing an estimated R55 million, making it a highlight of both local culture and international tourism.
