Hertford Civic Society is a community organisation dedicated to protecting and improving the character, environment and quality of life of Hertford and its surroundings. Founded in 1969 in response to plans that threatened the town’s historic market centre, the Society continues to encourage thoughtful development while safeguarding local heritage, public spaces and natural amenities. Its aims include promoting high standards of architecture and town planning, sustainable design, responsive infrastructure and public care for Hertford’s history and appearance.

The Society gives residents practical ways to take part in local issues. Members can monitor planning applications, attend council meetings, meet developers, gather evidence and contribute to campaigns and discussions. Its work covers planning representation, transport, the Green Belt, pollution, water quality, community safety, waste collections and local environmental concerns. It also organises regular meetings, talks, events and exhibitions, and promotes initiatives such as Green Fingers, architectural awards and Hertford plaques. The Society maintains the Salisbury Square fountain and supports public amenities.
