HesbEnergie is a citizen-owned renewable energy cooperative active in Belgium’s Hesbaye region. Founded in 2013, it brings residents together to develop, finance and operate local energy projects that support the ecological transition, reduce CO₂ emissions and strengthen energy independence. Its activities span wind power, hydroelectricity, biomass heat and solar energy. Projects include citizen-supported wind turbines, local biomass heating systems, hydroelectric installations and photovoltaic developments, sometimes delivered with public or private partners.
People can become cooperative members by investing in the cooperative, helping fund renewable energy infrastructure and taking part in a socially minded, locally rooted energy model. HesbEnergie also offers volunteer opportunities, organizes visits to its installations and runs public engagement initiatives. Through its partnership with the cooperative electricity supplier COCITER, eligible members can access locally produced, renewable electricity. COCITER manages the supplier switch, which the site says involves no cancellation fees or interruption of supply. HesbEnergie’s work aims to make energy production more sustainable, collective and connected to the region.
