Alto is the organization developing Canada’s first high-speed rail service, a major transportation project planned for the Toronto–Québec City corridor. Its proposed network would connect Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières and Québec City using approximately 1,000 kilometres of dedicated, mainly electrified track. Trains are designed to reach speeds of 300 km/h or more, with a focus on frequent, reliable journeys and an improved passenger experience.
Alto’s work includes planning the network, studying its potential environmental effects and engaging with communities, Indigenous Peoples, landowners and agricultural stakeholders. Field studies examine topics such as land, water, noise and vibration, while public consultation and project information help people follow development and share feedback. The project aims to make intercity rail more accessible and affordable, improve connections between communities, support economic growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
