About HI-SEAS
HI-SEAS is the Hawai'i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, a unique analog space research station located on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawai‘i. Situated at approximately 8200 feet above sea level, HI-SEAS offers a Mars and Moon-like environment for high-fidelity analog research tasks. The habitat, designed to have all the desirable analog features, provides a habitable volume of around 13,000 cubic feet.
It includes a kitchen, laboratory, bathroom, simulated airlock, engineering bay area, and small sleeping quarters for a crew of six. The site features Mars and Moon-like geology, allowing crews to conduct realistic geological and astrobiological field work. Additionally, the site is visually isolated, yet accessible by road, with nearby emergency services.
HI-SEAS also offers a unique communication system with high-latency communication, simulating the delays experienced during space missions. Overall, HI-SEAS provides an ideal setting for research and simulation of future planetary exploration missions
