About Northern Heartlands CIO
Hidden Heritage is an inspiring arts organization dedicated to celebrating and exploring the rich history of Willington, a former coal-mining town in County Durham. Over the course of the Hidden Heritage project, which ran from June 2022 to November 2023, Northern Heartlands effectively engaged the local community, including schools, care home residents, and various groups, in uncovering and sharing the town's unique stories from Roman times to the present day. The initiative culminated in the vibrant Hyem Fest! in July 2023, showcasing the wealth of heritage unearthed throughout the project.
Through community workshops, heritage walks, and events like the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee beacon lighting, Hidden Heritage aimed not only to educate but also to enhance the wellbeing of participants. Feedback indicated a significant positive impact on the community's connection to their heritage. Hidden Heritage welcomes contributions from the public, inviting anyone with stories or insights into Willington’s past to share them, enriching their historical archive and fostering a sense of belonging among residents.
