High Desert Quarter Horses is an Oregon ranch and breeding operation established in 2004 with a focus on producing big, stout ranch horses with sound minds, feet, backs, and withers. The program has a strong emphasis on King Fritz bloodlines in its mare herd. Based in Izee, between Burns and John Day, the ranch sits at 4,500 feet in rugged country on the northern edge of the Great Basin. Its mares and foals range across large pastures, where young horses encounter rocky terrain and water early in life.
The ranching operation spans 75,000 acres, much of it accessible only on horseback, and the horses are used regularly for work across the property. This practical experience informs the breeding program, which aims for athletic, substantial horses suited to years of use. High Desert Quarter Horses offers horses through an annual production sale, held on the second Saturday in July. Sale offerings include yearlings, saddle horses, and broodmares; the ranch also features stallions and a photo gallery.
