HikeSafe

HikeSafe is a New Hampshire outdoor-safety initiative that helps people prepare for hiking and other outdoor adventures. Developed and endorsed by New Hampshire Fish and Game and the White Mountain National Forest, it promotes education, responsible recreation, and the Hiker Responsibility Code. Its website offers safety tips, guidance on planning trips, information about hiking in the region, and resources to help visitors understand their responsibilities outdoors.

HikeSafe also shares Recreate Responsibly guidelines, encouraging visitors to check conditions before traveling, plan and prepare, support inclusive access, respect other visitors, follow Leave No Trace principles, and help sustain the places they enjoy. The initiative offers information about the voluntary NH hikeSafe card, which is available to adults 18 and older through the NH Fish & Game website. Valid only in New Hampshire for the calendar year of purchase, the card can help protect holders from liability for certain rescue costs; exceptions may apply under state law. NH Fish & Game administers the card and handles related questions.
