Hirsijärven Vesienhoitoyhdistys is a Finnish water-management association dedicated to protecting Hirsijärvi and the surrounding waterways. Working with local shareholders’ associations and other partners, it aims to preserve the waters as naturally as possible, improve their condition, and promote nature and environmental care in the areas they influence. The association has worked toward these goals for around 20 years and invites local residents and cottage owners to take part.
Its activities include monitoring water quality, tracking and reporting blue-green algae, and promoting practical restoration measures such as fisheries management, aquatic-plant cutting, dredging, and wetland projects. The association also develops action plans and cooperates with the regional ELY Centre on proposed projects. Work to restore the Mommolanjoki river area is intended to reduce harmful water-level fluctuations, improve fish and other aquatic species’ passage, and create diverse rapids habitat.
Through its website, Facebook page, member communications, and meetings, the association shares information about the lake’s condition and ways to help.
