Historic Elmwood Pinewood and Settlers’ Cemeteries preserve and share the history of Charlotte, North Carolina. Together, their burial grounds encompass more than 70 acres of public space and pay homage to the city’s beginnings. The organization helps visitors connect with the past through virtual tours of Elmwood, Pinewood, and Settlers’ cemeteries, as well as events such as Voices from the Past and the Drop Dead 5K.
Its Voices from the Past After Dark program brings stories of Charlotte’s history to life in a Halloween setting. The cemeteries also offer venue rental and opportunities to volunteer, participate in community activities, and support preservation through donations. Current restoration efforts include reinstalling damaged headstones at Settlers’ Cemetery and repairing the historic box tomb and family plot of Patrick Harty, which were damaged during Hurricane Helene.
Located in the heart of Charlotte, the cemeteries welcome visitors and encourage people to learn about local heritage, explore burial records through the appropriate research resources, and help protect these historic places for the future
