The Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood (SPHO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Historic Oakwood, Raleigh, North Carolina’s largest intact 19th-century residential neighborhood. Formed in the early 1970s to prevent demolition, the SPHO continues preservation work and supports community development and outreach. The neighborhood includes hundreds of homes in varied architectural styles and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also Raleigh’s first local historic district.
SPHO helps residents and visitors explore Oakwood’s history and character through events, tours, publications, and online resources. Its annual December Candlelight Tour opens the interiors of selected homes, while the Oakwood Garden Club’s spring Garden Tour & Tea showcases private gardens and a traditional tea. Visitors can also take a self-guided walking tour using the organization’s brochure and learn local stories through its Oral History Project.
The organization’s website provides neighborhood history, maps, photographs, event information, and news. Its online store offers Oakwood-themed items and books.
