Stichting Historisch Schoten is a heritage foundation dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the former municipality of Schoten, now part of Haarlem-Noord in the Netherlands. The foundation gathers and archives historical knowledge, documents and local stories, helping residents and researchers discover the area’s past. It also urges the municipality of Haarlem to protect Schoten’s remaining monuments from decline.
Its work covers subjects including Schoten’s seven former heerlijkheden, historic farms and country estates, local churches, schools, transport, cemeteries, street names and notable buildings. The foundation offers a collection of publications, from detailed studies of community life, parish history and archaeology to illustrated booklets about neighbourhoods and landmarks. Active working groups develop projects to preserve and make local heritage accessible, while its website features articles, photographs, videos, archival material and news.
Stichting Historisch Schoten also publishes the Schoter Nieuwsblad four times a year for donors. Its activities support interest in the region’s changing identity, from its rural origins to its incorporation into Haarlem in 1927 and subsequent urban growth.
