History of Electrification: Guinea-Bissau 1890–2020 is a research project examining how electricity supply in Guinea-Bissau has expanded, declined and begun to recover. Hosted by the University of Bayreuth’s Chair of Social Anthropology and funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the project studies the country’s electricity sector from the colonial period through 2020. It explores how decentralized local grids gradually served major marketplaces from the 1890s to the mid-1980s, how those systems later collapsed, and how renewed efforts since 2008 have supported more reliable supply through grid extensions and hybrid solar mini-grids.
The project’s work combines literature and report reviews, archival research in Lisbon and Bissau, expert interviews, and field visits to current and historic electricity-generation sites. Its website shares information about the research questions, methods and historical phases, with a research blog planned for findings and fieldwork impressions. Visitors can also get in touch or subscribe to receive project updates.
The research ran from June 2022 to May 2023
