History From Below (HFB) is a loose international network of independent radical history activists and practitioners, founded in 2012. Bringing together groups and individuals working beyond traditional academic settings, HFB explores history through community research, public events, creative media and grassroots perspectives. Its network includes projects focused on working-class histories, social movements, resistance, protest and overlooked pasts in cities and communities around the world.
HFB members offer a varied range of activities and resources, including walking tours, guided visits, podcasts, blogs, archives, workshops, illustrated histories, maps, infographics, posters and social media content. Examples include street expeditions in Berlin, radical history walks in London, tours of the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona, and projects documenting social movements in San Francisco and Australia. Other initiatives combine history with street art, photography, public-space interventions, comedy and visual storytelling. The network also supports DIY history research and creative ways to share historical knowledge. Its work connects local histories with wider struggles for social justice, making the past accessible, engaging and relevant to people today.
