About History
Mt Victoria Historical Society (MVHS) is a community organisation dedicated to exploring and sharing the heritage of Mount Victoria, an inner-city suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. Settled by New Zealand Company colonists in the early 1840s and named in honour of Queen Victoria, the area is also known by its Māori name, Matairangi. The Society highlights Mount Victoria’s history, its people and the places that give the suburb its distinctive character.
Its resources cover historic homes and architecture, including buildings ranging from Victorian to Art Deco, as well as notable residents and others with compelling stories. MVHS provides historic information, publications, newsletters and reports, and organises events and walks to help people engage with the suburb’s past. It also shares news about local heritage and invites people to become members, follow its updates on Facebook or get in touch.
Through these activities and resources, the Society supports appreciation of Mount Victoria’s built heritage and the stories that have shaped Wellington
