Hjartdal historielag

Hjartdal Historielag is a local history association established in 1989 to explore and preserve the history of Hjartdal, Sauland and Tuddal in Upper Telemark, Norway. Its work covers the communities’ rural heritage, including farming, forestry, traditional summer-farm life, local industry and trade, cultural monuments, family history and folklore. The association also documents the area’s early links to emigration to America, a subject that holds an important place in its local history.

The group shares historical information through its website, which features articles, images, project material and an overview of its books and archive collections. Its projects include research into historic routes such as Åsvegen, Prestevegen and old roads in Tuddal, as well as work on crofter settlements. Hjartdal Historielag publishes a contact bulletin, yearbooks, the Hjartdal calendar and other publications related to the local communities. It also supports cultural heritage preservation through a dedicated fund. The association welcomes new members and makes website material available for non-commercial use with appropriate source acknowledgement.
