The Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation is a South African organisation dedicated to celebrating, promoting and preserving African creativity, culture, heritage and traditions, in keeping with the legacy and values of musician Hugh “Bra Hugh” Masekela. Guided by the motto “Love, Learn, Teach,” the Foundation supports initiatives that connect generations, encourage artistic expression and uphold cultural pride and social activism.
Its work includes presenting and hosting cultural events such as HughFest, a music festival celebrating South African diversity, heritage and community through performances by established and emerging artists. The Foundation also partners with Joburg Theatre on tribute concerts honouring Masekela’s music and influence. Beyond events, it supports music education through the Hugh Masekela Heritage Scholarship, whose recipients have studied at the Manhattan School of Music. The organisation also offers heritage-related merchandise and books, including Masekela-branded T-shirts and his memoir, Still Grazing. Through these projects, the Foundation brings audiences together around African stories, music and artistic legacy, while helping keep Masekela’s spirit and contribution alive for future generations.
