Hong Kong Seagrass Restoration Association

Hong Kong Seagrass Restoration Association (HKSRA) is a collaborative organisation launched in January 2023 to protect and restore seagrass ecosystems in Hong Kong. It brings together the shared interests of academia, science, industry, NGOs, local communities and other stakeholders, using research and practical conservation efforts to strengthen the resilience and recovery of seagrass meadows. The association promotes the value of these habitats for human wellbeing, local livelihoods and the health of coastal environments, while seeking to reduce carbon dioxide in the local environment.

HKSRA’s work includes planning and supporting seagrass regeneration through replanting and restoration, enhancing coastal marine environments, improving ecologically sensitive habitats, and organising activities related to carbon reduction. It also works to educate the Hong Kong community about the benefits and services provided by seagrass meadows. During its first year, the association planned to develop baseline information on seagrasses and carbon stocks to inform future restoration and better understand the ecosystems’ services, particularly their contribution to blue carbon.
