Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Jim and Melanie Bowles to provide rescued horses with a safe, natural place to live. Based in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, the sanctuary cares for horses affected by abuse, neglect, illness, or injury, including animals who may have few other options. Its approach prioritizes emotional well-being alongside physical care: horses are not stalled, but live together as a herd without cross-fencing, with room to move, graze, and roam.
Proud Spirit does not adopt out the horses in its care, recognizing that many have already endured enough. The organization relies on donations to support daily care and continued rescue work; contributions are tax deductible. Proud Spirit also offers books by Melanie Sue Bowles, including Liberty Biscuit, a story about a girl who strives to protect a donkey and two neglected horses.
Profits from book sales help fund the sanctuary’s horses and rescue efforts. Through its care, fundraising, books, and educational storytelling, Proud Spirit advocates for horses to live in freedom and companionship
