HOTSPOT28 – Natural Climate Protection in the North is a collaborative conservation project working to connect biodiversity protection with climate action. Its 700-square-kilometre area extends from Lübeck along the western Mecklenburg Baltic coast to the Salzhaff near Rerik. Five partners coordinate the work, including Landschaftspflegeverein Dummersdorfer Ufer, Stiftung Umwelt- und Naturschutz Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, BUND Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the municipality of Ostseebad Insel Poel and the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.
By 2030, the project plans to implement 27 measures to strengthen habitats, support wildlife and promote the benefits of natural climate protection. Activities include restoring wetlands, moors, salt marshes and coastal habitats; improving conditions for breeding and migratory birds; managing vegetation through grazing; and protecting nests from predators. HOTSPOT28 also supports nature observation, environmental education and public engagement.
Its information and coordination centres bring partners, volunteers and the public together, helping build lasting cooperation and sustain conservation results across the region
