About Howard Stein 🇺🇸
Patterns of Identity is the creative practice of designer Howard Stein, focused on developing graphics and patterns for products and places. Its approach treats identity as a system of visual patterns: a distinctive visual language can help a brand express what it offers and make marketing more cohesive. Stein draws inspiration from nature and seeks to create a visual alphabet faithful to each client’s products or services, with identities designed to be versatile and adaptable.
The practice offers graphic design, surface patterns, illustration, and photography. Its work includes identity concepts for healthcare and life sciences ventures. For VESTEX, the investment arm of HELIX, Stein designed a logo whose green forms surround a gold element representing founders or startups. He also created the main logo for HELIX, associated with the message “Untwisting Complexity in Healthcare and Life Sciences.” Other concepts explore how a core symbol can generate many shapes and extend into applications such as business cards, including patterns inspired by molecular structures.
