About HPRS
The Health and Peer Relations Study (HPRS) is an Ontario-based research initiative that monitors the health and peer relationships of students in Grades 4 to 12. Led by Tracy Vaillancourt, PhD, and Daphne Korczak, MD, the study uses an accelerated longitudinal, population-based survey to provide schools and school boards with timely, accurate evidence. Its findings are intended to support decisions that promote student health, reduce violence, and improve school climate.
Students complete surveys during class time, with completion taking less than 20 minutes for Grades 4 to 6 and about 15 minutes for Grades 7 to 12. The research examines short- and long-term links between bullying exposure and mental health, including factors that may influence those relationships. Survey topics include physical and mental health, activity, sleep, nutrition, stress, loneliness, bullying, discrimination, technology use, school safety, climate, attendance, and mental health support. HPRS shares research information and resources and works with partners, with support from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund and the uOttawa Brain-Heart Interconnectome.
