Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is the main and largest international airport of Bangladesh located at Kurmitola, 17 km from the northern city center of the capital Dhaka. The airport covers an area of 802 hectares (1,981 acres). The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) manages and maintains the airport. It started functioning as the main international airport of the country from Tejgaon Airport in 1980. The airport was known as 'Dhaka International Airport' before being named in honor of Shah Jalal, one of Bangladesh's most revered Sufi saints. The IATA code for the airport
