Hucknall Flight Test Museum preserves the story of Rolls-Royce’s pioneering aviation work at Hucknall, where engines were flight-tested from 1934 to 1971, often in secret. The volunteer-run registered charity is based in the Grade II listed Wing Hangar, built in 1944 for specialist engine testing. Visitors can explore exhibits about the Merlin and Griffon engines, the Flying Bedstead vertical take-off test rig, and the people and aircraft behind major milestones in British aviation. The collection also covers ground testing that continued at the site into the early 2000s.
The museum offers pre-booked visits on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to November, as well as open days and seasonal events such as Bike Nights and Classic Car Nights. Groups and schools can arrange guided tours and STEM visits, and visitors can try a Jet Provost flight simulator. Entry is by suggested donation, with under-threes and carers admitted free. The museum welcomes donations and volunteers, with opportunities across guiding, engineering, archiving, and other roles.
