Huis Horison

Huis Horison, also known as Horizon House, is a nonprofit residential and sheltered-employment centre in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Established in 1974, it provides holistic care for adults with intellectual disabilities in a safe, supportive community. The centre accommodates up to 102 residents and also employs 35 day workers. Staff, instructors, medical professionals and a social worker support residents’ personal development, wellbeing, recreation and spiritual needs, while also offering assistance to their families.

Residents participate in work areas matched to their abilities and interests, gaining opportunities for meaningful activity, social connection and personal growth. These areas include woodwork, baking, sewing and handwork, recycling, repairs, cooking, gardening, plant propagation, laundry and free-range egg production. Huis Horison also operates Village Thyme, a shop offering products connected with its work areas, and provides guest accommodation and training.

As an independently funded nonprofit, Huis Horison relies on community support to sustain its services. People can contribute through donations, sponsorships, volunteering, fundraising and events, including its annual fête, trail run, golf day and padel tournament.
