About Human Pangenome Reference Consortium
The Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC) is an NIH-funded research initiative bringing scientists and bioethicists together to develop a human pangenome reference that better represents global human genomic variation. The consortium addresses limitations in the traditional linear human reference genome, which is an incomplete, mosaic assembly and can introduce reference bias that affects variant discovery, disease association studies, and genomic analyses. HPRC is building a resource composed of validated, telomere-to-telomere assembled genomes, annotations, and alignments, offering a broader foundation for research and data sharing.
Alongside this work, the consortium develops improved genome assembly technologies and a next-generation toolkit for comprehensive analyses that leverage the pangenome. Its website provides information about working groups, samples, data, technology, publications, consent and data-use policies, and project governance, as well as access to the HPRC Data Explorer. HPRC also shares release updates and resources for researchers, partners, and other interested communities.
Its aim is to make genomic reference resources more representative and useful for studying human genetic diversity
