About Hunley
Friends of the Hunley is a brand dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley.
On the night of February 17th, 1864, the Hunley attacked and sank the USS Housatonic, becoming the first submarine to ever sink an enemy ship. However, the Hunley mysteriously disappeared with its crew of eight. Lost at sea for over a century, it was finally located in 1995 and raised in 2000.
The Hunley Project, a collaboration between Friends of the Hunley, the South Carolina Hunley Commission, Clemson University Restoration Institute, Naval History and Heritage Command, and the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority, aims to conserve this innovative hand-cranked vessel and solve the mystery of its disappearance. Visitors can explore the Hunley during weekend tours and learn about its history, timeline, and the Civil War naval innovations it represents. The brand also offers school and group visits for a deeper understanding of this historical marvel.
Additionally, visitors can support the project by becoming members, donating, or shopping for official Hunley gear online. Join Friends of the Hunley and be a part of unraveling a timeless maritime mystery
