Huygens-Fokker

Stichting Huygens-Fokker is a Dutch centre for microtonal music, bringing together music that uses unconventional tunings and divisions of the octave across a range of styles and historical periods. Founded in 1960, the organisation works to collect, develop and share knowledge of microtonality with a wider public. Its programme includes concerts, lectures, workshops for adults and children, and lecture-performances. Recurring events include the Orgel! concert series, presented on the Fokker organ since 2009, and the one-day MicroFest Amsterdam festival.

The foundation also introduces audiences to the instruments and ideas behind microtonal music. Its resources cover tuning systems such as 19-, 24-, 31-, 41-, 53- and 72-tone scales, alongside literature, scores, historical material, recordings and videos. Featured instruments include the 31-tone Fokker organ, a Carrillo piano, a 31-tone guitar and an archifoon. Concerts bring together musicians and ensembles for historical and contemporary repertoire, including works created especially for microtonal instruments. Through these activities, Huygens-Fokker serves as a knowledge centre and platform for performers, composers, researchers and curious listeners in the Netherlands and internationally.
