HyMethShip is an innovative brand that is spearheading a green revolution in shipping. With a budget of 9.2 million euros, this European innovation project aims to achieve a tremendous 97 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring the highest energy efficiency. The project, which was launched in July 2018 and is set to be completed by the end of 2021, combines a membrane reactor, a CO2 capture system, a storage system for CO2 and methanol, and a hydrogen-fueled combustion engine into one system.

What sets the HyMethShip system apart is its closed CO2 loop ship propulsion system, which not only significantly reduces CO2 but also maintains the reliability of well-established marine engine technology. The project boasts a diverse and highly skilled consortium consisting of 13 partners from 6 different EU countries. This ensures that the innovative concept will not only be introduced to the market, but also become established.

By using renewable methanol as the energy carrier and implementing pre-combustion CO2 capture and storage, the HyMethShip system achieves a remarkable level of CO2 reduction. This solution is not only cost effective, but also supports the development of low flashpoint fuels.
