HyNet North West is a major UK industrial decarbonisation project focused on enabling a low-carbon future across North West England and North Wales. Bringing together established technologies and infrastructure, it aims to reduce the region’s carbon dioxide emissions by around a quarter while supporting investment, skills development and employment. The project captures carbon dioxide produced by heavy industry and transports it for permanent storage, while also producing and supplying locally made low-carbon hydrogen.
Its planned hydrogen network is intended to serve industry, transport, flexible power generation, and heating for homes and businesses. By creating a regional source of low-carbon energy, HyNet also seeks to strengthen UK energy security and help sectors that are difficult to decarbonise move towards net zero. The initiative works with partners and the supply chain to develop the infrastructure needed for carbon capture and storage, and for hydrogen production, transport and storage.
