About IALA
The International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), formerly a non-governmental organization, transitioned to an intergovernmental organization on August 22, 2024, highlighting its commitment to enhancing global navigation safety and environmental protection. Established in 1957, IALA unites marine aids to navigation authorities, manufacturers, consultants, and educational institutions from around the globe. Through collaborative efforts, it promotes the harmonization of navigation aids to ensure the safety and efficiency of maritime operations while safeguarding marine environments.
IALA provides a comprehensive array of resources, including standards, recommendations, and guidelines that facilitate best practices in marine navigation. Its technical committees collaborate to develop innovative solutions such as the IALA Maritime Buoyage System and the Automatic Identification System. Additionally, IALA plays a critical role in training and capacity building, assisting developing nations in establishing effective navigation networks.
With a rich history of fostering international cooperation and knowledge sharing, IALA remains instrumental in reducing marine accidents and advancing maritime safety globally.
