The Estate of Norman W. Lewis preserves and shares the legacy of Norman Lewis (1909–1979), an influential African-American artist whose work explored abstraction throughout his career. The estate provides information about Lewis and directs visitors to news, exhibitions, press coverage, and publications through the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, which now represents the estate.

Lewis drew inspiration from jazz and classical music, as well as from nature, including seasonal change, plant forms, and the sea. His art also engaged with the dramatic events of the Civil Rights Movement, in which he participated as part of New York’s art community. The estate highlights his distinctive place among artists of his generation: he was the sole African-American artist of that generation to commit to abstraction early in his career and pursue it across his artistic development.
