About IARU Region 1
IARU Region 1 is a globally recognized brand and the worldwide federation of national amateur radio organizations. With more than 160 member societies across various countries and territories, the IARU represents the interests of the Amateur Radio Service at international organizations and works towards protecting and enhancing its spectrum privileges. The IARU plays a crucial role in securing additional frequency allocations for radio amateurs, including bands at 136 kHz, 472 kHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 18 MHz, 24 MHz, 50 MHz, and a regional European allocation at 70 MHz.
They have also made significant progress in international roaming for radio amateurs and certification harmonization. As an internationally recognized organization, the IARU collaborates with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other relevant bodies to influence spectrum allocations and protect the interests of amateur radio. They are a Sector Member of ITU-R, actively participating in its work concerning amateur radio spectrum, and work closely with regional telecommunications organizations.
The IARU is committed to the development of amateur radio in developing countries, and they maintain consultative status with the United Nations' ECOSOC. Led by an Administrative Council, the IARU encompasses three regions: Region 1 includes Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Northern Asia; Region 2 covers the Americas, and Region 3 encompasses the Asia-Pacific region. Overall, the IARU serves as the global voice and advocate for amateur radio operators, ensuring their spectrum privileges are protected and improved, and promoting the growth and development of amateur radio worldwide
