The Institute for Work and Technology (IAT) is a research institute of the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, based in Gelsenkirchen, Bocholt and Recklinghausen. Since 1988, it has studied and helped shape structural change in the economy, society and regions. Working at the intersection of research and practice, the IAT develops evidence-based approaches to current social and economic challenges and shares its findings through projects, publications, teaching and public events.

Its research spans care and health, sustainability and ecological transformation, entrepreneurship, employment, education, regional development, migration, ageing, digital society, public services, working life and innovation. The institute collaborates with academic and practical partners, including Ruhr University Bochum, on regional, national and international initiatives. Alongside research and development, the IAT offers statistical analysis and consulting, and organises surveys and events as part of its projects.
