The Federal Research Center "Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas named after A. O. Kovalevsky" (FIC InBÜM) is one of Russia's leading marine biological institutions, dedicated to advancing scientific research in marine and freshwater biology and ecology.

Originating from the first marine scientific facility in the Russian Empire, the Sevastopol Biological Station, founded in 1871, FIC InBÜM operates several research stations, including the renowned Karadag Scientific Station. The center emphasizes the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological resources, conducting diverse studies in areas such as biodiversity, marine biotechnology, and ecological monitoring. It is also home to the research vessel "Professor Vodianitskii," the only specialized scientific ship in Crimea, capable of extensive oceanographic research.
