About ICAD
ICAD, I. P. is Portugal’s public institute focused on addictive behaviours and dependencies, known by the Portuguese abbreviation CAD. Its work supports a healthier society through evidence-based policy, prevention and care, with an emphasis on citizens’ and communities’ needs, access to accurate information, and non-discriminatory support. The institute coordinates national plans and action programmes, contributes to international cooperation, and publishes information on the country’s situation, research, annual reports and guidance on effective practice.
ICAD provides resources for both the public and professionals. These include a documentation centre, online materials and campaigns, information about psychoactive substances and gambling, guidance on seeking help, and details of support structures and programmes. Its areas of work include prevention, treatment, harm reduction, dissuasion and social reintegration, alongside training, professional resources and technical reports. The institute also organizes videoconferences, events and educational activities, and shares news about its initiatives and partnerships. Through these services, ICAD aims to improve health and well-being and make timely, appropriate support more accessible.
