About ICTY
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is a pivotal organization established by the United Nations Security Council on December 22, 2010. Designed to ensure accountability and justice in international criminal law, the Mechanism upholds the legacies of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Officially operational since July 1, 2012, in Arusha, Tanzania, and July 1, 2013, in The Hague, Netherlands, IRMCT serves essential judicial functions previously managed by these tribunals.
The Mechanism addresses ongoing cases, ensures the prosecution of fugitives, and promotes best practices in the realm of international criminal justice. Following the closure of the ICTR in 2015 and the ICTY in 2017, it has emerged as a stand-alone institution committed to preventing impunity and fostering judicial resilience. With a focus on justice, transparency, and accountability, the IRMCT plays a crucial role in safeguarding human rights on a global scale.
