The Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA) is an independent, progressive Pan-African organisation committed to developing alternative social and economic policies for South Africa, the African continent and beyond. Based in Salt River, Cape Town, IFAA brings together research, public discussion and cultural engagement through a range of programmes and publications. Its work includes New Agenda, a journal featuring current issues, articles and a catalogue of past editions, and The DECODE Project.
Young Climate Voices is another programme, while the organisation also convenes the IFAA Forum Programme and the Ben Turok Memorial Lecture. Through the Living Rights Festival, IFAA creates a public platform for engagement with rights and social questions. The institute shares news, statements and commentary on issues affecting South Africa and the region, including migration, xenophobia, democracy and justice.
Its activities connect critical scholarship with public debate and support discussion of alternatives to existing social and economic approaches. IFAA also highlights its intellectual and scholarly partnership with the University of the Western Cape
