The institut für finanzdienstleistungen e.V. (iff) is a nonprofit, independent research institute founded in 1987. Working at the intersection of science and practice, it studies financial services and consumer protection, with particular attention to the experiences of consumers and people facing difficult financial circumstances. Its interdisciplinary approach brings together legal, economic and educational expertise to support fairer financial services.
The iff serves consumer advocates, policymakers, debt advice professionals and other practitioners through research, analysis and specialist advice. Its work includes studies and projects on over-indebtedness, consumer protection and financial issues, alongside publications such as its Over-Indebtedness Report, policy briefs, statements and research papers. The institute also offers training, events and opportunities for professional exchange, including conferences and online workshops focused on over-indebtedness research. In addition, it provides CAWIN, software for debt counselling. By connecting independent research with practical expertise, the iff aims to inform policy and support effective consumer-focused work.
