The Institute for Field Research (IFR) provides peer-reviewed fieldwork training in the cultural and natural sciences, combining hands-on learning with opportunities to earn academic credit and apply for scholarships. Its study-away programs take students to research sites around the world, where they can gain experience in archaeology, bioarchaeology, anthropology, conservation, ecology, and related fields.
Programs span winter and summer sessions and include archaeological excavations and surveys, laboratory work, underwater archaeology, architectural conservation, and studies of sustainable agriculture and biodiversity. Locations range from Ireland, Oman, and the United States to China, Turkey, Australia, Tanzania, and countries across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Offerings include projects such as human-origins research in South Africa, Viking archaeology in Iceland, digital archaeology in Utah, and bioarchaeology in the United Kingdom.
IFR supports prospective and enrolled students with application and eligibility guidance, information on academic credits and transcripts, financial aid, scholarships, payment policies, and health and safety resources.
