IGERT, or Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship, has been the flagship interdisciplinary training program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) since its inception in 1998. This program is dedicated to educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers by merging their disciplinary expertise with extensive interdisciplinary training. By fostering collaborative research that transcends traditional boundaries, IGERT equips students with the essential skills needed to lead in the evolving landscape of science and engineering.
With a strong emphasis on diversity, IGERT prepares students to tackle complex research challenges that impact society on both national and international levels. To date, the program has awarded approximately 278 grants, helping around 6,500 graduate students develop crucial personal and professional skills for the 21st-century workforce. Additionally, the newer NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program has broadened the scope of graduate education, focusing on innovative, evidence-based training methods in interdisciplinary research areas. Through its initiatives, IGERT continues to leave a lasting impact on the future of scientific research and education.
