About Instituto Histórico e Geográfico De Santa Catarina | Florianópolis SC
The Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina (IHGSC) is a scientific and cultural institution founded on September 7, 1896, in Florianópolis, Brazil. It was created by José Artur Boiteux, along with representatives from the political, cultural, and economic sectors, including professors, traders, industrialists, and professionals. With over 200 members, including Honorary, Corresponding, and Meritorious members, the IHGSC conducts administrative and solemn sessions in its headquarters and other municipalities in Santa Catarina.
The institute actively participates in events organized by the Brazilian community's Historical and Geographical Institutes. They publish an annual journal with essays from their associates, a monthly newsletter about their activities, and two book collections: A Catariniana, which publishes important unpublished texts on Santa Catarina's history, and Ensaios, dedicated to biographies of historical figures. With a vast archive, library, map collection, photo archive, and news archive, IHGSC is the most important center for preserving and promoting the memory of Santa Catarina.
