The International Law Association (ILA) is a global membership organisation founded in Brussels in 1873 to advance the study, clarification and development of public and private international law, and to promote international understanding and respect for the law. Its more than 5,000 members belong to branches across the world and include legal practitioners, academics, government officials, judges and experts from commercial, industrial and financial fields. The Association also holds consultative status with several United Nations specialised agencies.
The ILA pursues its objectives through international committees, study groups, publications and events. Its committees examine subjects including international monetary law, global health law, space law and sea level rise, while study groups address areas such as UN sanctions and international law and regional organisations. The Association welcomes people interested in its mission and encourages younger professionals to contribute. Its principal gathering is a biennial international law conference, alongside activities organised by its branches.
