Illuminated River

Illuminated River is a groundbreaking brand that has created the first cohesive lighting vision for the Thames bridges in central London. Their mission is to celebrate these iconic structures as architectural, social, and historical landmarks, while also creating a symbolic link across the political, financial, and cultural centers of the capital. Illuminated River's impressively long 3.

2-mile installation spans from London to Lambeth bridges, making it the longest public art commission in the world. Designed and programmed by renowned artist Leo Villareal and British architecture practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, Illuminated River uses subtle sequences of LED lights to unveil the beauty of London's bridges and their relationship to the flowing river beneath them. Each bridge features a unique ribbon of shifting colors and lights, showcasing the architecture and celebrating the history of these magnificent structures.

Despite challenges, including Covid-19 restrictions, the project was completed on time and on budget. Illuminated River offers a transformative cultural experience, allowing the public to enjoy the architectural beauty of the bridges while gaining a deeper understanding of their connection with the river. Led by the Illuminated River Foundation and supported by private philanthropists, the project has brought together more than 50 stakeholders and project partners, including bridge owners, statutory bodies, and local communities.

This monumental installation, fully funded by private donors, adds to London's rich heritage of public art and showcases the city's commitment to accessible and free cultural experiences. Illuminated River's impact is set to expand as it continues to illuminate additional bridges, offering a whole new perspective on the Thames and enhancing London's nighttime landscape
