The Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics (IMGGI) of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a pioneering research establishment founded in 1946. Initially serving as a scientific base on Sakhalin, it has evolved into a key player in geological and geophysical research, addressing natural and anthropogenic disasters as well as sustainable resource management.
IMGGI specializes in fundamental, applied, and exploratory research across geology, geophysics, and geoecology. Its teams of 120 qualified personnel, including 64 researchers, engage in advanced methodologies like seismic prediction and tsunami risk analysis. The institute also publishes several monographs and a scientific journal, "Geosystems of Transitional Zones.”
Facilities encompass seven laboratories, a graduate department, and a shared usage center. Unique collections of natural samples from Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands are maintained. Notably, the institute has developed national standards for tsunami risk assessment and has achieved significant advancements in earthquake forecasting methodologies crucial for disaster management in the region.
